Travelling
to Dinner Plain via Bright, Harrietville is the last town before heading
up the mountain road to Mount Hotham. An old gold mining town (there
is still one mine operating) that was settled in 1852, Harrietville's
history is captured in a riverside park that pays homage to the local
pioneers, and is a pleasant place to stretch your legs.
Nestled on the banks of the Ovens River, Harrietville and the stretches
below offer great opportunity to chase wild trout on a fly fishing
adventure, or alternatively head for the trout farm just out of
the town towards Bright. There is also a great lavender farm with
a fantastic devonshire tea.
For
those not feeling up to a walk from Hotham out to Mount Feathertop
and back, an easier walk is part way along 'The Razorback, then
down Bon Accord Spur, finishing up in Harrietville. Arrange with
friends to leave a car at the bottom, or else friends to pick you
up and return you to Dinner Plain.
