From Melbourne :
From the CBD, and Northern side of Melbourne, the most popular route is up the Hume Freeway (M31) to the Great Alpine Road (B500) exit near Wangaratta. Follow the Great Alpine Road through the picturesque Ovens Valley, passing through the towns and villages of Myrtleford, Porepunkah, Bright and Harrietville, before the spectacular drive up to Mt Hotham village. Dinner Plain is just 11km further along the Great Alpine Road, towards Omeo. Drive time: 4.5 hours from CBD.

From the South-Eastern side of Melbourne, or in case of road closure between Harrietville and Hotham, the alternative is down the Princes Freeway (A1) through Gippsland, to Bairnsdale. From there, the Great Alpine Road (B500) heads north through equally spectacular high country views, passing through Bruthen, Ensay, Swift's Creek and Omeo. Dinner Plain is a further 43 km from Omeo, heading up into the Alpine National Park. Drive time: 5 hours from CBD.

From Albury (incl Sydney, Brisbane, etc) :
Visitors coming from the north can also join the Great Alpine Road at either Myrtleford or Bright after taking the Kiewa Valley Highway (C531) from Wodonga. Alternatively, take the C315/C532 from Wodonga to Yackandandah and then on to Myrtleford on the C527.

From Eastern Vic and NSW South Coast :
Coming down the east coast on the A1, visitors can change to the C620 at Nowa Nowa, which then takes you to Bruthen, on the Great Alpine Road. Head north to Omeo and then on towards Mt Hotham.

From North-Western Vic and SA :
The most direct route is along the Murray Valley Highway through Echuca then to Shepparton and Benalla, briefly on to the Hume Freeway (M31) then through Milawa to Myrtleford, Bright, Hotham and Dinner Plain

If driving through Bright to get to Dinner Plain in Winter, it is recommended that road conditions be checked with VicRoads (Ph 131170). The road is very exposed in places and is subject to closure during bad weather. The alternative route through Omeo is rarely affected.

It is a legal requirement that suitable fitting vehicle chains are carried and you know how to fit them between June and October. Chains may be hired in Myrtleford, Bright, Harrietville or Omeo if you do not own your own set.
